Cocktail
Muddle
In a cocktail shaker, add the fresh mint leaves and agave nectar. Gently muddle the mint just to release aroma and oils — avoid over-muddling to prevent bitterness.
Combine
Add the añejo rum (2 oz), fresh lime juice (0.75 oz), fresh grapefruit juice (0.5 oz), falernum (or spiced syrup) (0.5 oz), and 2 dashes aromatic bitters into the shaker.
Shake
Fill the shaker with ice (cubes) and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.
Strain
Double-strain the contents into a chilled old-fashioned glass filled with crushed ice (or fresh ice cubes) to catch mint bits and any pulp.
Garnish & Finish
Express the oils of a grapefruit twist over the drink by holding the twist skin-side down and giving it a firm bend above the glass, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the drink.
Garnish with a fresh mint sprig tucked to the side and serve immediately.
