Preparation
Chill glass
Place a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you mix the cocktail.
Prepare garnish (optional)
If rimming, lightly wet the glass edge with a lime wedge and dip into a very thin layer of smoked salt or chile flakes on a small plate. Set garnish (orange wheel or twist and lime wedge) aside.
Mixing
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice (enough to chill well). Add tequila blanco (2 oz), Benedictine (1/2 oz), chile liqueur (1/2 oz), orgeat (1/2 oz), fresh orange juice (3/4 oz), fresh lime juice (1/2 oz), and simple syrup (1/4 oz) if you prefer a slightly sweeter drink.
Dry shake (no ice) for 10–12 seconds if you prefer a frothier texture from the orgeat, then add ice and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well chilled. Alternatively, skip the dry shake and shake with ice for 15–20 seconds.
Discard ice or water from the chilled glass. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or into a rocks glass over fresh large ice, depending on preference.
Garnish with an orange wheel or express an orange peel over the drink and lay it on the rim, and add a lime wedge or twist. If you rimmed the glass, leave it as is; optionally sprinkle a very small pinch of chile flake on top for aroma.
