Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

If desired, chill a 10–12 oz copper mule mug or highball glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice while preparing ingredients.

  2. 2

    Add spirits and citrus

Fill the chilled mug or glass about three-quarters full with ice cubes. Pour in 2 oz vodka and 1/2 oz freshly squeezed lime juice.

  3. 3

    Top with ginger beer

Slowly pour about 4 oz cold ginger beer over the back of a spoon or directly into the glass to preserve carbonation and create a layered pour. Adjust quantity to taste; the mug should be nearly full.

  4. 4

    Stir gently

Use a bar spoon or long spoon to gently stir the cocktail once or twice to combine vodka, lime, and ginger beer without losing carbonation.

  5. 5

    Garnish and serve

Garnish with the lime wedge on the rim, and optionally a sprig of mint and a small piece of candied or fresh ginger on a pick. Serve immediately with a straw if desired.

  6. 6

    Variations & notes

For a Moscow Mule use vodka as listed. For a Kentucky Mule substitute bourbon (2 oz). For a Mexican Mule substitute tequila (2 oz). Use more or less lime and ginger beer to taste. Use fresh lime juice (not bottled) for best flavor.
