Mojito Base

Method

Mojito Base

1

Prepare glass and mint

Place 10–12 fresh mint leaves in a sturdy highball or Collins glass. Reserve one sprig for garnish. Add 2 teaspoons of granulated sugar on top of the leaves.

2

Add lime

Squeeze 1 ounce (about the juice of half a lime) of fresh lime juice into the glass, then drop in the squeezed lime wedge (or a fresh wedge) to add extra oils and flavor.

3

Muddle gently

Using a muddler (or the blunt end of a wooden spoon), gently press and twist the mint, sugar, and lime together 6–8 times. The goal is to bruise the mint to release oils without shredding it into tiny pieces.

4

Add rum and ice

Pour 2 ounces of white rum into the glass. Add about 1 cup of crushed ice, filling the glass roughly three-quarters full. If you don't have crushed ice, fill with ice cubes to the top.

5

Stir to dissolve sugar

Use a long bar spoon to stir vigorously for about 10–15 seconds so the sugar dissolves and the mint, lime, and rum integrate.

6

Top with club soda

Pour approximately 3 ounces of chilled club soda over the top to fill the glass, leaving a slight gap at the rim.

7

Final stir and garnish

Gently fold once or twice with the bar spoon to combine—avoid over-stirring which can flatten the soda. Add a sprig of mint and a lime wheel or wedge for garnish. Optionally slap the mint sprig between your palms briefly to release its aroma before placing it in the drink.

8

Serve

Serve immediately with a straw, encouraging the drinker to stir occasionally as they sip to keep flavors balanced.
