Method
Prepare glass (optional)
Chill a martini or coupe glass by filling with ice water while you prepare the cocktail (about 3–5 minutes). If you want a sugared rim, run a lemon wedge around the rim and dip into a shallow plate with the sugar, then set the glass aside to dry for a minute.
Mix cocktail
Fill a cocktail shaker with the ice cubes. Pour in 2 oz vodka, 1 oz limoncello, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, and 0.25 oz simple syrup.
Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is well-chilled and slightly frosty. This both chills the drink and adds a small amount of dilution to balance sweetness and alcohol.
Empty the ice water from your chilled glass (and discard any remaining water). Double-strain the cocktail into the glass through a fine mesh strainer or the shaker's strainer to remove small ice shards for a smooth, clear martini.
Garnish & Serve
Serve immediately. Estimated flavor: bright, sweet-tart lemon with a clean vodka backbone. Adjust sweetness to taste by increasing or decreasing the simple syrup slightly.
