Cocktail
Optional Cold-Brew Variation
Method
Prepare Espresso
Brew
Brew 1 ounce of fresh espresso using an espresso machine. If you don't have an espresso machine, use 1 ounce of very strong coffee (freshly brewed) or 0.75 oz cold-brew concentrate from the optional section. Allow the espresso to cool for 30–60 seconds but use while still warm to help create crema when shaken.
Mix and Shake
Fill a cocktail shaker about two-thirds full with ice (approximately 6 ice cubes). Add the vodka (1.5 oz), coffee liqueur (1 oz), freshly brewed espresso (1 oz) and simple syrup (0.25 oz). If using the cold-brew variation, omit the espresso and add 0.75 oz cold-brew concentrate instead.
Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 12–20 seconds. Vigorously shaking is important: it chills the drink, dilutes slightly, and aerates the espresso to produce a glossy, foamy crema on top.
Serve
Notes
Adjust simple syrup to taste: increase to 0.5 oz for a sweeter cocktail. Use freshly brewed espresso for the best crema and flavor. For a dairy twist, substitute 0.25–0.5 oz of the vodka with coffee-flavored cream liqueur, but this changes the classic profile.
