Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Prep the Potatoes

Wash the Russet potatoes thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt. Peel them if desired, although leaving the skin on can add texture and flavor.

  2. 2

    Cut the Potatoes

Slice each potato into even strips, about 1/4 inch thick. Try to keep the sizes uniform to ensure even cooking.

  3. 3

    Soak the Potatoes

Place the cut potato strips in a large bowl of cold water. Soak for at least 30 minutes to remove excess starch, which helps achieve a crispier fry.

  4. 4

    Dry the Potatoes

After soaking, drain the water and thoroughly pat the potato strips dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.

  5. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can use a thermometer to check the temperature.

  6. 6

    Fry the Potatoes

Carefully add the dried potato strips to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for 4-5 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

  7. 7

    Drain and Season

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fries from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. While they are still hot, sprinkle with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika to taste.

  8. 8

    Serve

Serve the fries hot as a side dish, snack, or with your favorite dipping sauce.
