Method

Brew

1

Measure and grind

Weigh or measure 35 g (0.035 kg) of coffee beans. For a 500 ml yield use a coffee-to-water ratio of roughly 1:14. Grind to the appropriate size for your brew method: coarse for French press, medium-coarse for pour-over, medium for drip, and fine for espresso.

2

Heat water

Bring 500 ml (0.5 l) of filtered water to the appropriate temperature: about 93°C (200°F) for most methods, slightly cooler (88–92°C) for pour-over. If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let rest 30 seconds.

3

Bloom (for pour-over or drip)

Place the ground coffee in your filter/brew basket. Pour about 60–70 ml of hot water evenly over the grounds to saturate them, and let bloom for 30–45 seconds. This releases trapped CO2 for more even extraction.

4

Brew

Continue pouring or allow the brewer to draw water through the coffee until you have extracted about 500 ml of brewed coffee. Total contact time should be: 4–5 minutes for French press, 2:30–3:30 minutes for pour-over, 4–6 minutes for some immersion drips. For espresso, pull a 25–35 ml shot per single or 50–70 ml for a double as appropriate (adjust beans and grind to taste).

5

Serve

Give the brewed coffee a gentle swirl and pour into a pre-warmed mug.

Optional additions

6

Milk (for latte-style or to taste)

If using milk, steam or heat 120 ml (0.12 l) to about 60–65°C (140–150°F) for serving. For a simple coffee with milk, pour warmed milk into the brewed coffee in the ratio you prefer (commonly 1:3 to 1:1 coffee-to-milk depending on strength). For a latte, use about 1 part espresso to 2–3 parts steamed milk.

7

Sweeten & flavor

Add sugar (about 2 tsp) or 1 tablespoon simple syrup to taste. Stir until dissolved. Optionally add a pinch of salt to round bitterness or 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon for spice. Adjust quantities to preference.

8

Finish

Taste and adjust: add more milk, sweetener, or spices as desired. Serve immediately.

Cleanup

9

Discard used grounds or compost them. Rinse and clean equipment (brew basket, carafe, French press plunger) to prevent stale oils building up. Wipe down kettle and counter.
