Coffee Base

Method

Prepare Glass & Coffee

1

Warm the glass

Preheat an Irish coffee glass (or a heatproof mug) by filling it with hot water for 30 seconds, then discard the water. This helps keep the drink hot.

2

Brew 1 cup of strong hot coffee. While the coffee brews, place the sugar where you’ll mix the drink.

Build the Drink

3

Add 1 teaspoon granulated sugar to the warmed glass.

4

Pour in 1.5 oz Irish whiskey and 0.75 oz Baileys Irish Cream into the glass over the sugar.

5

Add 1/4 oz crème de menthe. The small amount of crème de menthe adds a subtle mint accent — adjust slightly to taste but do not overpower the whiskey and cream.

6

Pour in the hot coffee (about 1 cup) slowly, leaving about 1/2 to 3/4 inch of space at the top for the cream. Stir gently until the sugar is fully dissolved and the liqueurs are combined with the coffee.

Top with Cream & Garnish

7

Lightly whip 2 tablespoons heavy cream just until it thickens slightly but is still pourable. Do not over-whip — you want it pourable so it floats on the coffee.

8

Pour the lightly whipped cream over the back of a warm spoon held just above the coffee surface so the cream floats as a layer on top.

9

Finish with a light dusting of freshly grated dark chocolate or cocoa powder (about 1 tsp) over the cream for aroma and a touch of bitterness.

10

Serve immediately while hot. Sip the coffee through the cream layer to experience the contrast of hot coffee and cool cream.
