For the Orange Juice
Method
For the Orange Juice
- 1
Prepare the fruit
Wash the oranges thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt or residues. Roll each orange firmly on the countertop with the palm of your hand to soften them and make juicing easier.
- 2
Juice the oranges
Cut each orange in half crosswise. Use a citrus juicer (manual or electric) to extract the juice from all orange halves into a large measuring cup or bowl. If you prefer pulp-free juice, press through a fine mesh strainer into another container, using the back of a spoon to help push the juice through; discard or reserve the pulp.
- 3
Adjust consistency and sweetness
Taste the fresh orange juice. If it's very tart or concentrated, add up to 1 cup of cold water and stir. If you'd like it sweeter, stir in up to 1 teaspoon granulated sugar until dissolved. If you want a slightly brighter acidity, add 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice and mix.
- 4
Chill and serve
If serving immediately, fill glasses with ice cubes (if desired) and pour the orange juice over the ice. Otherwise cover the container and chill in the refrigerator for 30–60 minutes. Stir before serving. Serve cold.
- 5
Store any leftover juice in a sealed container in the refrigerator and consume within 48 hours for best flavor. Stir or shake before pouring as natural separation may occur.
