Method

Cocktail

1

Chill glass (optional)

If you prefer a colder serving, place the rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail and discard before pouring.

2

Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or small shaker, add 2 oz bourbon, 0.25 oz simple syrup, 3 dashes Angostura bitters, and 1 dash orange bitters.

3

Add ice and stir

Add enough ice to the mixing glass to fill it. Stir gently and consistently for about 20–30 seconds (around 15–20 full turns) until well-chilled and slightly diluted.

4

Prepare serving glass

Discard any ice or water from the chilled rocks glass. Place a single large ice cube or sphere into the glass.

5

Strain

Strain the chilled mixture into the glass over the large ice cube using a julep or Hawthorne strainer so the drink is clear and cold.

6

Express orange oils

Hold an orange peel over the drink, skin side down about 4–6 inches above the surface, and give it a firm twist to express the oils across the surface. Optionally run the peel around the rim to add aroma.

7

Garnish and finish

Drop the expressed orange peel into the glass. If using, add one Luxardo cherry on a pick or place the flamed zest atop the drink. Serve immediately.

Optional

8

Flamed orange zest (optional)

Hold the orange peel with a small curve so oils will spray down. Light a match or lighter, briefly bring it between the flame and the peel, and squeeze the peel so a small spray of oil flashes through the flame onto the surface of the drink. Exercise caution and keep a safe distance.
