Method
Cocktail
Prepare espresso
Brew a fresh shot (about 1 oz) of espresso using an espresso machine. If you don't have an espresso machine, brew a strong coffee or use cold-brew concentrate and measure 1 oz. Allow the espresso to cool slightly (30–60 seconds) so it won't melt the ice immediately.
Combine ingredients
Add the vodka (2 oz), coffee liqueur (1 oz), the freshly brewed espresso (1 oz), and simple syrup (0.25 oz) to a cocktail shaker. Add a generous handful of ice (about 1 cup) to the shaker.
Dry shake (optional)
If you prefer a richer, frothier crema on top, first seal the shaker and shake vigorously without ice for 10–15 seconds (this emulsifies the espresso and helps build foam).
Shake with ice
Add ice if you performed a dry shake (or if you didn't, shake now). Shake very vigorously for 15–20 seconds until the outside of the shaker is frosty and you feel the contents are well chilled and aerated.
Strain and serve
Discard the ice or water from the chilled glass if you used it to chill. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer (or just the shaker strainer) to catch any fine ice shards and preserve the crema.
Garnish
Carefully place three whole coffee beans on top of the crema in a triangular pattern for a classic finish.
Adjust sweetness
Taste and, if desired, add a little more simple syrup (0.25 oz increments), stirring gently in the glass with a cocktail pick or by giving a very brief swirl. Be careful not to disturb the crema too much.
