Method

Burger

1

Form patty

Gently form the 4 oz (0.25 lb) ground beef into a round patty about 3½–4 inches across and roughly ½ inch thick, making a slight indentation in the center with your thumb to reduce doming while cooking.

2

Season

Lightly season both sides of the patty with the kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.

3

Cook patty

Preheat a grill or skillet to medium-high (about 375–400°F / 190–205°C). Brush the grill or pan with the 1/2 tsp vegetable oil. Cook the patty 3–4 minutes per side for medium (adjust time 2–3 minutes per side for medium-rare or 4–5 minutes per side for well-done). Do not press the patty while cooking. Internal temperature should reach 160°F (71°C) for well-done per USDA recommendations for ground beef; for kids you may prefer fully cooked.

4

Rest patty

Remove patty and let rest on a plate 2 minutes while finishing the roll and fries.

5

Toast roll

Split the kid-size roll and spread 1/2 tsp softened butter on the cut sides. Place cut-side down on the grill or skillet for 30–60 seconds until lightly browned and warmed. Assemble patty on the bottom half of the roll.

Toppings & Condiments

6

Place one lettuce leaf on top of the patty (or under, if preferred). Add 1 slice of tomato and 2 pickle chips. Offer or add ketchup (1 tsp) and mustard (1/2 tsp) to taste, either spread on the roll or served on the side for dipping.

Fries

7

Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Spread the 3 oz frozen fries in a single layer on a baking sheet. Lightly spray or toss with 1 tbsp oil. Bake 12–18 minutes, turning once halfway, until golden and crisp. Sprinkle 1/8 tsp salt immediately after removing from oven and toss gently.

8

Or deep-fry option

Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry fries in batches for 3–4 minutes until golden. Drain on paper towels and season with 1/8 tsp salt.

Finish & Serve

9

Place the assembled burger on a plate with the fries. Cut into halves if desired for a child. Serve warm with ketchup or additional condiments on the side.
