Cocktail Base

Method

Prep

1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or Nick & Nora glass (or an old-fashioned glass if preferred) in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you build the cocktail.

2

Prepare garnish

Using a peeler or sharp knife, cut a 1-inch-wide strip of orange peel, avoiding too much pith. If using a cherry, have it ready on a pick.

Build & Stir

3

Fill a mixing glass or small pitcher with the large ice cubes. Add 3 oz bourbon, 1 oz dry vermouth, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 1/2 oz orange curaçao, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

4

Stir the mixture vigorously but gently with a bar spoon for 25–30 seconds (about 20–30 full spoon rotations) until the outside of the mixing glass feels very cold and the liquid is well diluted (roughly 20–25% dilution for spirit-forward stirred cocktails).

5

Remove the chilled serving glass from the freezer or discard the ice water and briefly wipe it dry.

6

Strain the stirred cocktail through a fine mesh strainer or julep strainer into the chilled glass. If serving over ice, strain over a single large ice cube in an old-fashioned glass.

Finish & Serve

7

Express the orange peel over the drink by holding it skin side down about 2–3 inches above the surface and giving it a firm twist to spray the oils across the cocktail. Rub the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop it into the drink (or hang on the rim).

8

Optional: garnish with a Luxardo or maraschino cherry on a pick. Serve immediately.
