Preparation

Method

Preparation

1

Clean workspace and equipment

Sanitize the Shirodhara vessel, pot, thermometer, funnel, and muslin cloth. Lay out towels and a plastic sheet or basin to protect the table and floor.

2

Measure oils and herbs

Combine 2 cups sesame oil and 0.5 cup sweet almond oil (optional) in the metal or glass pot. Add the dried Brahmi, Ashwagandha, Jatamansi (if using), calendula, and chamomile to the oil. Stir gently to distribute herbs.

Infusing the Oil

3

Set up double boiler

Place the pot with oil and herbs inside a small saucepan containing about 100 ml of simmering water (double-boiler). Keep heat low—do not boil the oil. Maintain a gentle simmer so the oil warms slowly.

4

Warm and infuse

Heat gently for 25–35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the oil is fragrant and the herbs have released color and aroma. Use the thermometer to keep the oil temperature between 40–50°C (104–122°F). Do not exceed 55°C.

5

Strain

Remove the pot from heat and allow the oil to cool slightly for 5–10 minutes. Pour the oil through a muslin cloth or fine sieve into a clean container to remove herbs. Press the herb mass to extract remaining oil. Add 0.5 tsp vitamin E and 3 drops essential oil if using; stir gently.

Set Up Client and Equipment

6

Prepare the client

Have the client lie supine on a treatment table with a cushioned headrest. Place towels under the neck and shoulders. Protect clothing and table with towels/plastic sheet and position the basin to catch drained oil. Ensure room is warm and quiet.

7

Fill Shirodhara vessel

Pour the infused oil into the Shirodhara vessel. Place the vessel on its stand approximately 50–60 cm (20–24 inches) above the client's forehead. Test the pour onto a towel to ensure a steady, even stream and to confirm temperature.

8

Check temperature

Measure the oil temperature with an instant-read thermometer; target 38–40°C (100–104°F) for comfort. Adjust by briefly placing the vessel in a warm water bath or letting it cool until the target temperature is reached. Always test on your inner wrist before starting.

Shirodhara Treatment

9

Begin pouring

Start a gentle, continuous stream of oil onto the center of the forehead (the area between the eyebrows, the ‘third eye’ region). Maintain a steady rhythm and even flow. The stream should be about the thickness of a pencil or slightly thicker depending on vessel and client comfort.

10

Circular motion

Allow the oil to flow for 30–40 minutes while slowly moving the pourer or adjusting the stream to trace a very gentle, consistent arc across the forehead (left to right and back) so the whole brow area is covered. Keep movements slow and deliberate to maintain even coverage.

11

Monitor client comfort

Check in quietly with the client after the first 2–3 minutes and periodically thereafter about temperature and comfort. Re-measure temperature if needed. If client reports any discomfort or excessive heat, stop and adjust immediately.

12

Finish the pour

Gradually slow the stream over 1–2 minutes before stopping to provide a smooth ending. Tip the vessel to halt flow and remove from above the client.

Post-Treatment

13

Allow oil to rest

Let the oil on the forehead and scalp sit for 5–10 minutes while the client remains relaxed. Offer a warm, damp towel to gently wipe excess oil from the face. Avoid wetting the hair immediately if a longer oil absorption is desired.

14

Head and neck massage (optional)

If desired, perform a light head, neck, and shoulder massage using a small amount of the infused oil to extend relaxation for 5–10 minutes. Use slow, calming strokes.

15

Clean up

Help the client sit up slowly. Provide tissues or a warm towel for them to remove oil from hairline and face. Collect drained oil in the basin, clean and disinfect the Shirodhara vessel and equipment. Store remaining infused oil in a dark glass bottle in a cool place; refrigerate if not used within 2–3 weeks.
