Method

Preparation

1

Set up

Choose a quiet, warm, well-ventilated room with easy access to a toilet. Lay a yoga mat or towel on the floor and place a bowl or bucket nearby. Keep all required items within reach.

2

Prepare the solution

Heat 2.5 liters of water until warm but not hot (around 37–40°C / 98–104°F). In a large container, dissolve 2 tablespoons of rock salt thoroughly. If you choose to use Epsom salt, add 1 teaspoon and stir until dissolved. Optionally add lime slices or ginger for mild flavor—these are optional and not traditional.

3

Personal preparation

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. It is best to perform Laghoo Shankha Prakshalana on an empty stomach (early morning) or at least 3–4 hours after a light meal. Have a towel and the bucket ready.

Practice Sequence

4

Initial drink

Stand comfortably next to the bowl. Take the first large cup (approximately 200–250 ml) of the warm saline solution and drink it steadily in one go.

5

First set of asanas

Immediately after drinking, perform 5 repetitions each of the following asanas in order: Tadasana (Standing Forward Bend — bend forward and pat the abdomen for 30 seconds), Tiryaka Tadasana (side-bending standing twist), and Ardha Uttanasana (half forward fold). The traditional practice uses a specific simple sequence: Stand, bend forward and gently press the abdomen; sit and press the lower abdomen; lie down and roll — but if you are unfamiliar, follow gentle forward bends and abdominal compressions. Purpose: to move the liquid along the intestines.

6

Repeat drinking and asanas

Repeat the cycle of drinking one cup of solution and then performing the same set of 5 repetitions of the asanas. Continue until you have consumed all 2.5 liters of the solution. Typical sequence: drink — move — drink — move — until finished. This usually takes 6–8 cycles depending on cup size.

7

After final dose

After the last cup and the subsequent set of asanas, wait briefly and then go to the toilet. The goal of this practice is to produce clear watery stools, indicating the bowels have been cleansed. Continue using the toilet as needed until the discharge is clear.

Post-Prakshalana Care

8

Rinse and rest

Rinse your mouth and freshen up. Rest for 10–20 minutes lying on your left side or in a comfortable position to allow the body to stabilize.

9

Rehydration and first foods

Begin rehydration with small sips of warm water or coconut water. After an hour, if you feel ready, take a light, easily digestible meal—khichdi (rice and moong dal porridge) or warm cooked rice with ghee is ideal. Avoid heavy, spicy, cold, or raw foods for the rest of the day.

10

Monitoring

If you experience severe abdominal pain, fever, persistent vomiting, dizziness, or weakness, stop and seek medical attention. This practice is not recommended for pregnant women, people with hypertension, heart disease, intestinal disorders (ulcers, Crohn’s disease), or after recent abdominal surgery; consult a qualified practitioner before attempting.
