Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

1

Chill glass

Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill with ice and water while you prepare the cocktail to chill the glass.

2

Brew espresso

Brew a fresh single shot (about 1 oz) of espresso and let it rest for 20–30 seconds so it's hot but not steaming; alternatively use 1 oz very strong cold-brew concentrate (chilled).

3

Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add the vodka (2 oz), coffee liqueur (1 oz), freshly brewed espresso (1 oz), mocha syrup or chocolate liqueur (0.5 oz), simple syrup (0.25 oz), and 2 dashes of coffee bitters if using. Add a generous handful of ice (about 1 cup).

4

Shake

Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–18 seconds. The goal is to rapidly cool and dilute the drink and to create a rich, velvety crema from the espresso. If using hot espresso, shake briskly but take care — use a shaker designed for hot liquids or allow espresso to cool slightly before shaking.

5

Strain

Dump the ice/water from the chilled glass if you used it to chill. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled martini or coupe glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove small ice chips and espresso grounds, producing a smooth surface and crema.

Garnish & Finish

6

Garnish the surface with three coffee beans arranged in a line or triangle. Lightly dust with chocolate shavings or a pinch of cocoa powder if desired. Serve immediately.
