Method
Preparation
Measure and heat
Weigh 20 g of whole coffee beans. Pour 300 ml filtered water into the kettle and heat to between 90°C and 96°C (195–205°F). If you don't have a thermometer, bring water to a boil and let stand 30 seconds.
Grind
Grind the 20 g of beans to the grind size appropriate for your brewing method: coarse for French press, medium-coarse for pour-over, medium for drip, fine for AeroPress (with short brew), or fine for espresso (if using an espresso machine). Aim for a consistent grind.
Brewing (Pour-over example)
Prepare filter and pre-wet
Place a paper filter in the pour-over cone and rinse it with hot water from the kettle. This removes paper taste and preheats the brewer and cup. Discard the rinse water.
Bloom
Place the ground coffee in the filter. Start a timer and pour 40–50 ml of the hot water evenly over the grounds to saturate them. Allow the coffee to bloom for 30–45 seconds; you should see gases escaping and the grounds swell.
Main pour
After the bloom, pour the remaining water in slow, concentric circles, maintaining a steady level of water and avoiding pouring directly on the filter paper. Aim to finish pouring by about 2:00–2:30 minutes total brew time.
Drain and serve
Allow all water to drain through the grounds. Remove the brewer and discard the grounds and filter. Pour the brewed coffee into a cup and taste.
Brewing (French press alternative)
Combine grounds and water
Add coarsely ground coffee (20 g) to the French press. Pour in 300 ml of hot water, ensuring all grounds are saturated. Give a gentle stir to ensure even extraction.
Steep and plunge
Place the lid with the plunger pulled up. Let the coffee steep for 4 minutes (adjust 3–5 minutes to taste). After steeping, gently press the plunger down and immediately pour the coffee into a cup to avoid over-extraction.
Optional Finishing
Add milk / sweetener
If desired, heat 60 ml of milk and add to the brewed coffee. Stir in 1 tsp sugar (or sweetener) to taste. For a touch of flavor, add 0.25 tsp ground cinnamon or 0.25 tsp vanilla extract. A pinch of salt can help round flavors.
