Method

Toast

1

Prepare ingredients

If using chilled butter, remove butter from the refrigerator about 10 minutes before starting so it softens slightly and is easier to spread. Place jam jar and a knife or small spoon on the counter.

2

Toast the bread

Place 2 slices of bread in a toaster and toast to your preferred level of doneness (light to medium is typical for a balance of crisp exterior and slightly soft interior). If using an oven or broiler, arrange slices on a baking sheet and broil or bake at 200°C (400°F) for 3–6 minutes per side, watching closely to avoid burning.

3

Butter the toast

Immediately after the bread is toasted, use a knife to spread 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter evenly over each warm slice so the butter melts into the surface. If desired, sprinkle a very small pinch of salt over the buttered toast to enhance flavor.

4

Add jam

Using a clean knife or spoon, spread about 1 tablespoon of jam over the buttered surface of each slice. Spread gently and evenly to cover the slice. Adjust amount to taste.

5

Serve

Place the two prepared slices on a plate. Cut in half diagonally or serve whole. Serve immediately while warm. Optional accompaniments: coffee, tea, or fresh fruit.
