Method

Toast

1

Prepare

Remove two slices of bread from packaging and place near the toaster or oven. If using refrigerated butter, let it sit at room temperature for 5–10 minutes to soften slightly so it spreads easily; if you prefer melted butter, heat instead (see next steps).

2

Toast the bread

Using a pop-up toaster: place the two slices in the slots, set the browning control to medium (about 2–3 on many toasters) and start the cycle. Using an oven/toaster oven: preheat to 175°C (350°F), place slices directly on the rack or on a baking sheet, and bake 4–6 minutes until edges are golden, flipping halfway if needed. Using a skillet: heat a dry or lightly greased skillet over medium heat and cook each slice 1–2 minutes per side until golden and slightly crisp.

3

Butter the toast

As soon as the bread finishes toasting, transfer one slice to a plate. If using softened butter: spread approximately 1 tablespoon of butter evenly over the hot slice with a butter knife, covering the full surface to let the heat melt it into the bread. Repeat with the second slice. If using melted butter: brush about 1 tablespoon onto each slice with a pastry brush.

4

Finish and serve

If desired, lightly sprinkle a small pinch (about 1/8–1/4 tsp) of salt over each buttered slice to enhance flavor. Serve immediately while warm so the butter is melted into the toast.
