Method
Prep & Make Garlic Butter
Soften butter
Remove butter from refrigerator about 20–30 minutes before starting so it softens to a spreadable consistency. If short on time, cut into small pieces to speed gentle softening.
Mince garlic
Peel and finely mince 6 garlic cloves. For a smoother, more evenly distributed garlic flavor, smash the minced garlic with the flat side of a knife and chop again or use a microplane.
In a medium bowl, combine 3/4 cup softened unsalted butter, minced garlic, 3 tablespoons finely chopped parsley, 1 tablespoon chopped basil (if using), 1/4 cup grated Parmesan (if using), 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice (optional). Mix thoroughly until evenly blended and smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
Assemble Bread
Preheat oven
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Position a rack in the center of the oven.
Prepare loaf
If using a whole baguette: slice the loaf in half lengthwise. If you prefer individual pieces, slice the loaf into 1–1.5 inch thick diagonal slices, being careful not to cut all the way through if you want a pull-apart style (slices should remain connected at the bottom).
Brush the cut sides lightly with 1 tablespoon olive oil to help crisp the crust. Spread the garlic-herb butter generously and evenly over the cut surfaces of the bread, making sure some butter gets into the cuts between slices if applicable. If you want extra cheesy garlic bread, sprinkle additional grated Parmesan over the top. Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes if using for a mild heat.
Bake & Finish
Place the assembled bread on a baking sheet, cut-side up. Bake in the preheated 400°F (200°C) oven until butter is melted and edges are golden, about 10–12 minutes for halved loaves or 8–10 minutes for pre-sliced pieces.
For a crispier top, switch the oven to broil on high for 1–2 minutes — watch carefully to avoid burning. Remove from oven when the top is bubbly and lightly browned.
Let the garlic bread rest 2–3 minutes, then if you baked a whole half-loaf, slice into serving pieces. Serve warm.
