Bread & Spreads
Prepare bread
Lay the two slices of bread flat on a cutting board. Spread the unsalted butter evenly on one side of each slice. This is the outside if toasting/grilling; if serving cold you can skip the butter or apply it for flavor.
Apply condiments
Flip the slices so the unbuttered sides face up. On one slice, spread the mayonnaise evenly. On the other slice, spread the mustard evenly. These form the interior spreads that keep fillings moist and flavorful.
Fillings
Place the cheese slice on top of the mayonnaise-spread slice so it contacts the bread. Layer the deli-sliced turkey or ham evenly over the cheese. Add the tomato slices on top of the meat, then place the lettuce leaf over the tomato. If using, scatter the red onion rings on the lettuce.
Season the tomato with the salt and freshly ground black pepper to bring out flavor. Use the measured amounts and distribute evenly across the tomato slices.
Assemble & Finish
If you prefer a warm/grilled sandwich: heat a skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Place the sandwich buttered-side down and cook 2–3 minutes until golden, then flip and cook another 2–3 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese has softened. If you prefer a cold sandwich: cut diagonally or down the middle and serve immediately.
Slice the sandwich in half if desired and serve. Enjoy with chips, pickles, or a side salad.
