Cigars

Method

Preparation & storage

1

Conditioning

If the cigars were recently purchased and not stored in a humidor, place the unopened 25-count box in a humidor or airtight container with a 69% RH humidification pack for 7–14 days to allow the cigars to acclimate and reach stable humidity.

2

Storage (long term)

Store the box in a humidor set to 65–70% relative humidity and 65–70°F (18–21°C). Replace humidification packs per manufacturer guidance (typically every 2–3 months) and monitor humidity with a hygrometer.

Preparing to smoke

3

Inspect a cigar for consistency of color, feel, and any soft spots. Select a cigar and use the cutter to remove the cap: for a guillotine cutter, cut just above the cap line; for a V-cutter, make a single precise cut to create a small notch. Avoid cutting too far down into the head.

4

Light the cigar using a cedar spill, butane torch, or wooden match. Toast the foot first by holding the flame just below (not touching) the foot and rotate until an even ring of char appears. Bring the cigar to your lips and finish lighting while drawing gently. Aim for an even, glowing foot.

Smoking and tasting

5

Take slow, gentle puffs roughly once every 30–60 seconds to keep the cigar lit and to avoid overheating. Do not inhale; draw the smoke into your mouth and savor the flavors before exhaling.

6

Observe flavors and strength through the smoke: note initial flavors on the first third, how the profile evolves in the middle, and the finish on the final third. Use a notebook to record tasting notes (aroma, flavor descriptors, body, balance, burn quality, and ash appearance).

7

Maintain the cigar by tapping off ash when it reaches 1–2 inches, and re-light if it goes out — re-toast the foot if necessary and re-establish an even burn. If the cigar becomes canoe-shaped (uneven burn), gently rotate and touch up the underburn with the lighter.

Finishing and disposal

8

Let the cigar go out naturally in the ashtray. Do not crush or stub it out like a cigarette — this preserves flavors in your area and is more respectful of the cigar. Once cool, discard the cigar butt in a proper waste receptacle.

9

Clean and refill your ashtray if necessary; if you used a lighter or matches, ensure they are extinguished and stored safely.
