Season the humidor (if needed)

If your humidor is new or has been dry, season it first. Wipe the interior lightly with a distilled-water-dampened cloth. Place a small open container or the humidification device filled with distilled water or a 50/50 distilled water/propylene glycol solution inside, close the lid, and let it sit for 48 hours. Monitor with the digital hygrometer until the humidor stabilizes near 70% relative humidity.

Set up humidification

Install the humidification device in the humidor and fill it with distilled water or propylene glycol solution (use about 50 ml or per manufacturer instructions). Place the digital hygrometer where it’s visible, close the humidor, and allow it to equilibrate for at least 24 hours. Adjust as needed to maintain 65–72% RH and 18–21°C (64–70°F).

Condition the cigar (if recently shipped)

If the cigar has traveled or been stored in uncontrolled conditions, place it in the stabilized humidor for at least 1–2 weeks before smoking so moisture content evens out.

Inspect the cigar

Hold the Partagas Serie D No.4 up to the light and inspect for integrity of the wrapper, any soft spots, and a firm, even roll. A slightly springy feel is normal; avoid large soft spots that indicate damage or uneven packing.

Cut the cap

Using a sharp guillotine or double-blade cutter, remove the cap of the cigar. Aim to remove just enough of the rounded cap to create a clean opening—about 1–2 mm from the end. Make a single decisive cut to avoid tearing the wrapper.

Toast the foot

Hold the torch lighter or match about 1–2 cm away from the foot (open end) of the cigar. Rotate the cigar slowly while applying short bursts of flame to toast the outer wrapper at the foot without drawing. Continue until the foot shows even light charring across the surface.

Light and draw

Bring the cigar to your lips and hold the flame just short of the foot while gently drawing to ignite the filler. Rotate and draw until the burn becomes even and a thin ring of glowing embers forms across the foot. Avoid prolonged direct flame contact with the wrapper to prevent charring.

Puffing cadence

Take slow, measured puffs roughly once every 30–60 seconds. Do not inhale—draw into the mouth to taste, then exhale. Keeping a moderate cadence prevents the cigar from overheating and preserves flavor balance.

Ash management

Let ash build to about 2–3 cm (3/4–1 in) before tapping it off gently into the ashtray. Avoid knocking the cigar; instead, rotate it in the ashtray and let gravity do the work to prevent wrapper damage.

Relighting

If the cigar goes out, gently re-toast the foot as you did initially and relight with the torch or match while drawing slowly. Purge any sour or bitter notes by taking several steady draws after relighting.

Finish

A cigar usually ends naturally when the nicotine and flavors taper off or the remaining length becomes too hot. To finish, set the cigar in the ashtray and let it die on its own; do not stub it out forcefully. Dispose of the butt once cool.

Pair the Partagas Serie D No.4 with complementary beverages: robust coffee, aged rum, tawny port, or a full-bodied red wine. Serve beverage at appropriate temperature and sip between draws to cleanse the palate.

If using cedar spills, light a spill and draw it across the foot to add a subtle cedar aroma before lighting the cigar.
