Method
Coffee
Brew espresso
Grind enough fresh coffee for a single espresso shot (about 7–9 g). Tamp and pull a single or double shot to yield roughly 1 cup if you prefer a longer drink; more commonly brew a strong 1/2 cup (about 30–60 ml). If you prefer an Americano-style Il Corretto, pour the espresso into a preheated cup and top with 1/2 cup hot water to reach desired strength.
Preheat the serving cup by rinsing with hot water, then discard the rinse water. Pour the brewed espresso (and hot water if using) into the warmed cup.
Alcohol (choose one)
Measure 1 tablespoon of your chosen spirit (grappa is the traditional choice). Warm it slightly by swirling it in the cup for a few seconds — do not boil. Pour the spirit into the cup with the espresso.
If using a strongly flavored liqueur such as sambuca or dark rum, consider reducing the sugar to balance sweetness, or use a smaller amount (3/4 tbs) depending on taste.
Optional finishing
Taste the Corretto and add up to 1 teaspoon sugar or a dash of simple syrup if you prefer it sweeter. Stir gently to combine the alcohol and coffee.
Express a piece of lemon or orange peel over the cup to release oils, run it around the rim, and drop it in as garnish if desired. Serve immediately while hot.
