Cigar

Method

Storage and Preparation

1

Humidor conditioning (if storing)

If you are not smoking the cigars immediately, store the H. Upmann Half Corona box in a humidor set to 65–70% relative humidity and 65–70°F (18–21°C). Ensure the humidor is properly seasoned and the hygrometer reads accurately. Place the box in the humidor and let it acclimate for at least 48 hours before smoking to ensure even moisture.

2

Inspect the cigar

Remove a cigar from the box and visually inspect the wrapper for any cracks, tears, or soft spots. Roll it gently between your fingers to check for consistent firmness; a slight give is normal, but it should not be spongy. If the cigar is too dry or too moist, adjust humidor conditions before proceeding.

Cutting

3

Choose and prepare your cutter

Select a sharp guillotine or double-blade cutter. Hold the cigar horizontally with the head (closed end) facing you. Identify the cap line—the small round piece of wrapper leaf at the head.

4

Make the cut

Position the cutter to remove approximately 1–2 mm of the cap, aiming to cut just above the cap line. Make a firm, swift cut to avoid crushing the cigar. For a Half Corona (typically 3.5–4 inches), a single straight cut near the shoulder will provide good draw; avoid cutting too deep into the wrapper.

Lighting

5

Warm the foot

Hold the cigar at a 45-degree angle and, using a butane torch or long match, toast the foot (open end) for 5–10 seconds without touching the flame to the tobacco. Rotate the cigar so the entire circumference warms and begins to char lightly.

6

Light up

Bring the cigar to your lips and draw in while holding the flame just off the foot. Continue rotating and puffing until the foot has an even, glowing ring. Avoid inhaling smoke into your lungs; draw into your mouth and exhale gently. If using matches, let the sulfur burn off slightly before lighting to avoid off-flavors.

Smoking

7

Pace and draw

Take slow, gentle puffs every 30–60 seconds to keep an even burn and to prevent overheating, which can cause harshness. Aim for draws of 1–2 seconds. Allow the cigar to rest between puffs to preserve complexity of flavor.

8

Manage the ash

Let the ash grow to about 1–2 inches before gently tapping it into an ashtray. A long ash can help retain heat and even burn, but avoid letting it fall unexpectedly.

9

Correcting burn issues

If the cigar tunnels or has an uneven burn, gently rotate and relight as needed. Lightly touch up the under-burned side with your lighter to even the burn line. If harsh flavors develop, stop smoking for a few minutes to let the smoke cool.

Finishing and Storage

10

Ending the smoke

When you are finished, set the cigar in an ashtray and let it extinguish on its own. Do not crush the cigar as you would a cigarette; this prevents unpleasant odors and makes relighting easier if desired later.

11

Storing remaining cigars

Return any unused cigars to the humidor promptly to maintain proper humidity. If you lack a humidor, store the box in a sealed plastic container with a small, regulated humidification device to preserve freshness for short-term storage.

12

Cleaning up

Dispose of the ash and any remnants responsibly. Allow lighters to cool and store cutters and lighters in a safe place for next use.

Pairing suggestions

13

Sip a neutral beverage like water between puffs to refresh the palate. For complementary flavors, consider pairing the H. Upmann Half Corona with a medium-bodied whisky, aged rum, cognac, or espresso to highlight the cigar's flavor profile. Taste pairings slowly to avoid overpowering either the cigar or the drink.
