Martini

Method

Martini

1

Chill glass

Place the coupe or martini glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to thoroughly chill the glass.

2

Add ingredients

Fill the mixing glass with ice (about 1 cup). Pour in 2.5 oz Tanqueray No.10 gin and 0.5 oz chilled dry vermouth. If using, add 1 dash of orange bitters to brighten the aromatics.

3

Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture gently for 20-30 seconds (about 20-30 full rotations) until well chilled and slightly diluted — the exterior of the mixing glass should feel very cold and slightly frosted.

4

Prepare garnish

While stirring, use a peeler or paring knife to cut a 1/2–1 inch wide strip of lemon peel (about 1 twist). Express the oils over the chilled glass by holding the peel skin-side down and giving it a quick twist over the glass, then rub the peel around the rim if desired.

5

Strain and serve

Empty ice water from the chilled serving glass if used. Using a strainer, double-strain the chilled martini into the glass. Garnish with the lemon twist laid on the rim or floated on the surface. Serve immediately.

Equipment

6

Use the mixing glass or shaker and bar spoon to combine and chill ingredients. Strain with the Hawthorne or julep strainer into the chilled coupe/martini glass. Use the peeler or paring knife to make the lemon twist garnish.
