Fresh Orange Juice

Method

Fresh Orange Juice

1

Prepare the oranges

Wash the oranges thoroughly under cool running water. Roll each orange on the countertop with the palm of your hand pressing slightly to soften and release juice. Cut each orange in half crosswise.

2

Juice the oranges

Using a citrus juicer (manual or electric) press and twist each orange half to extract the juice into a measuring cup or bowl. If you prefer pulp-free juice, press through a fine mesh sieve into a second container, discarding seeds and larger pulp. You should yield about 2 to 2.5 cups of fresh orange juice from 6 medium oranges.

3

Adjust texture and sweetness

If the juice is very thick or very sweet, add the cold water a little at a time (up to 1/2 cup) and taste. Stir in the granulated sugar and a pinch of salt; continue to stir until the sugar dissolves. Add the optional fresh lemon juice if you want a brighter, tangier flavor. Taste and adjust sugar or water to your preference.

4

Chill and serve

Fill glasses with ice cubes. Pour the prepared orange juice over the ice. Serve immediately for best flavor. If you prefer the juice fully chilled without dilution, refrigerate the juice for 30–60 minutes and serve over ice just before drinking.

5

Storage

Store any leftover fresh orange juice in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. Shake or stir before serving as fresh juice may separate.
