Fresh Orange Juice
Method
Fresh Orange Juice
- 1
Prepare oranges
Wash the oranges under cool running water and pat dry. Roll each orange on the countertop with slight pressure to loosen juices.
- 2
Cut and juice
Cut each orange in half crosswise. Using a manual citrus juicer, reamer, or electric juicer, extract the juice from all orange halves into a measuring cup or pitcher. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a second pitcher if you prefer pulp-free juice; skip straining if you like pulp.
- 3
Sweeten and adjust
Taste the juice. If it tastes slightly flat or too tart, stir in up to 1 teaspoon granulated sugar until dissolved. Add the optional 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice only if you want extra brightness. If juice is very strong, stir in 1/4 cup cold water to lighten and help mix sugar. Mix thoroughly.
- 4
Chill and serve
Fill 2 serving glasses with 3 ice cubes each (adjust to preference). Pour the fresh orange juice over the ice, dividing evenly between the glasses. Garnish each glass with a mint sprig if using. Serve immediately for best flavor.
- 5
Storage
If not serving right away, transfer juice to a covered container and refrigerate up to 48 hours. Stir or shake gently before serving; fresh juice will separate slightly over time.
