Whiskey Base

Bitters & Aromatics

Method

Whiskey Base

  1. 1

    Measure whiskey

Measure 2 oz rye or bourbon whiskey and pour it into a chilled mixing glass or shaker.

Sweetening & Flavor

  1. 2

    Add syrups and liqueur

Add 0.25 oz maple syrup (or 0.25 oz simple syrup) and 0.25 oz dry curaçao (or Cointreau) to the mixing glass with the whiskey.

Bitters & Aromatics

  1. 3

    Add bitters

Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to the mixing glass.

  2. 4

    Stir and chill

Fill the mixing glass with large ice, then stir with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until well-chilled and properly diluted (the glass should frost slightly).

  3. 5

    Prepare glass & strain

Place one large ice cube into a rocks glass. Using a Hawthorne or julep strainer, strain the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the rocks glass over the large ice cube.

  4. 6

    Garnish

Express an orange peel over the drink by holding it over the glass and giving it a firm squeeze to release oils, then run the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink.

Serve

  1. 7

Serve immediately. Sip and enjoy the whiskey-forward profile with citrus and maple highlights. Adjust sweetness by increasing or decreasing the maple/simple syrup by 0.125–0.25 oz on future pours if desired.
