Cocktail
Chill glass
Place a rocks glass or Old Fashioned glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water while you build the cocktail to chill the glass. Let sit at least 3 minutes, then discard ice water if used.
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker without the shaker top, add 2 oz Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Rye, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz dry vermouth, and (if using) 0.25 oz orange liqueur. Add 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters (optional).
Prepare serving glass
Remove the chilled rocks glass from the freezer or discard the ice water. Place a single large ice cube or sphere into the glass.
Strain and finish
Strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube using a Hawthorne strainer or julep strainer to catch any small ice chips.
Garnish
Express the oils from an orange twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding the twist about 2–3 inches above the glass and giving it a quick inward squeeze to release the oils, then run the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink as garnish.
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the rye's spice and the sweet/vermouth balance. Estimated small additional dilution will occur as the large ice cube melts.
