Platter & Tools
Prepare serving pieces
Select a large board or platter. Arrange three small bowls on the board where sauces, nuts, or small candies will go. Place knives and spreaders nearby so guests can serve themselves.
Fresh Fruit
Wash all fresh fruit thoroughly. Hull and halve the strawberries. Stem and separate grapes into small clusters. Rinse blueberries and drain. Thinly slice the pear or apple and toss slices immediately with a squeeze of 1–2 teaspoons lemon juice to prevent browning. Halve dried apricots or figs if large. Place fruit in attractive small piles or clusters across the board, leaving gaps for other components.
Baked & Crunchy
Break larger cookies or biscotti into varied sizes for visual interest and ease of pickup. Fan crackers or thin toasts in small stacks. Place mini cookies and pretzels in separate piles. Keep crunchy items near softer components (cheeses, spreads) but not directly on top to avoid sogginess. Reserve some crackers near chocolate and caramels for pairing.
Sweets & Confections
Break dark chocolate into squares or shards. Arrange caramels and marshmallows in small groups. If using candies, place them in one small bowl to keep flavors contained. Distribute chocolate pieces across the board so guests can reach them from either side.
Creamy & Spoonable
Spoon mascarpone (or softened cream cheese) into one small bowl and drizzle 1 tablespoon honey on top; provide a spreader. Put Greek yogurt or clotted cream into a second bowl. Transfer Nutella to a third bowl or ramekin and warm briefly (10–15 seconds in microwave) if desired so it is easier to spoon. Place whipped cream in a small bowl if using. Place these bowls strategically near crackers, cookies, and fruit for easy pairing.
Nuts & Savory Accents
Toast raw almonds or pecans in a dry skillet over medium heat for 4–6 minutes, stirring, until fragrant (if already toasted, skip). If using candied nuts, place them in a small bowl. Scatter a few nuts directly on the board to fill gaps and add texture. Sprinkle a small pinch of flaky sea salt on a couple of chocolate pieces and caramels to elevate flavor.
Sauces & Finishing
Warm the chocolate ganache or melted chocolate until pourable (microwave in 15–20 second bursts, stirring, or use a double boiler) and place in a bowl for dipping. Warm caramel sauce slightly if chilled and place in a second bowl. Spoon berry compote or jam into the third bowl. Dot sauces around the board so they’re accessible to nearby items. As a final touch, tuck small pieces of chocolate bark and a few extra berries into empty spaces, and drizzle remaining honey lightly over some fruit or mascarpone. Taste and adjust: add another pinch of sea salt where needed.
Assemble & Serve
Start assembly by placing larger items (bowls, clusters of fruit) first to establish layout. Fill in with medium items like cookies, crackers, and chocolate. Finish by filling gaps with nuts, small candies, and dried fruit. Arrange items in repeating color/texture groups around the board to create balance and encourage mixing of flavors. Provide small spoons for sauces and napkins for guests. Serve immediately at room temperature; if you must hold, cover loosely and refrigerate for up to 4 hours (bring back to room temperature before serving).
