Chill glass
Place a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink to chill.
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.75 oz amaro, 0.5 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz Benedictine (or similar herbal liqueur), 0.25 oz simple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters.
Stir
Add 3 large ice cubes to the mixing glass and stir gently for 30–45 seconds until well chilled and properly diluted (about 20–25% dilution by eye — the drink should coat the back of a spoon).
Prepare glass
If you chilled the serving glass with ice water, dump it out. Optionally add a large rock of ice to a rocks glass if you prefer your drink over ice; otherwise use the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.
Strain and finish
Double-strain the mixture into the chilled glass (or strain over the large ice cube if using rocks glass) to remove small shards of ice and ensure a silkier mouthfeel.
Garnish
Express an orange peel over the glass by holding the peel skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the drink and giving it a firm twist to release oils. Rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the drink as garnish.
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly — this is a spirit-forward, slightly bitter-sweet, herbal cocktail designed to be sipped and savored.
