Method
For the Mozzarella Sticks
Prep the Cheese
Unwrap the string cheese sticks and place them in the freezer for about 30 minutes to firm up.
Set Up the Breading Station
Prepare three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with beaten eggs mixed with milk, and one with bread crumbs mixed with Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper.
Bread the Cheese
Take the cheese sticks out of the freezer. Dip each stick first in the flour, then in the egg mixture, and finally coat them with the bread crumbs. Place them on a baking sheet.
Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan or pot, heat vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
Fry the Cheese Sticks
Carefully add the breaded cheese sticks to the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
For the Marinara Sauce
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer.
Simmer the Sauce
Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. If desired, add fresh basil before serving.
