Preparation
Measure and combine
Add 2 oz Michter's American Whiskey, 0.5 oz Cynar, and 0.75 oz sweet vermouth to a mixing glass or shaker tin.
Add bitters
Add 2 dashes mole bitters and 1 dash Angostura bitters (optional) to the mixing glass. The mole bitters bring chocolate/chili notes; Angostura adds aromatic backbone if desired.
Add ice and stir
Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice (enough to come close to the rim, about 1 cup). Stir gently and steadily for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full rotations) until the mixture is well chilled, slightly diluted, and satin-smooth.
Prepare glass
If you chilled the glass with ice water, dump it now. Strain the mixed cocktail through a julep or fine strainer into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.
Garnish
Express an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel with the outside facing down above the glass and giving it a firm twist to spray oils onto the surface. Rub the rim lightly with the peel and drop it into the drink or place on the rim. Optionally, add a Luxardo or brandied cherry on a pick.
Serve
Serve immediately. The drink should be balanced — whiskey forward with bittersweet and herbal undertones from Cynar and a subtle chocolate/spice note from the mole bitters.
