Garnish & Glass Prep
Prepare glass
Chill a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 10 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.
If rimming, pour the chocolate syrup onto a small plate. Place the cocoa powder or finely grated chocolate on a second small plate. Lightly dip the rim of the chilled glass into the chocolate syrup, then into the cocoa or grated chocolate to coat. Optionally, drizzle additional chocolate syrup inside the glass in a spiral for a decorative effect.
Martini
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice (about 3/4 full) to properly chill and dilute the drink.
Add vodka, chocolate liqueur, heavy cream (or half-and-half), simple syrup (if using), and chocolate bitters (if using) to the shaker.
Secure the shaker and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds. This chills the mixture and slightly aerates the cream for a silky texture.
Discard ice or water from the chilled glass if used. Strain the cocktail through a fine mesh strainer (or cocktail strainer) into the prepared glass to remove small ice chips and produce a smooth surface.
Garnish with chocolate shavings or a chocolate curl on the surface of the drink. Serve immediately.
