Punch Base

Method

Punch Base

1

Combine spirits and juices

In a large (3–4 quart) punch bowl or container, pour in the light rum, dark rum, and vodka. Add the orange, pineapple, and cranberry juices. Stir gently with a long-handled spoon to combine until uniform.

2

Sweeten and balance

Add the simple syrup, then add the fresh lime juice and fresh lemon juice. Stir and taste: the punch should be bright and slightly sweet; adjust by adding up to 2 tablespoons more simple syrup if you prefer sweeter, or additional citrus (lime/lemon) if it needs more brightness.

Chill & Finish

3

Chill and marry flavors

Cover the punch bowl and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, ideally 2–4 hours. Chilling helps the flavors meld and keeps the punch from becoming watered down too quickly when ice is added.

4

Add ice and carbonation

Just before serving, place a large block of ice or plenty of ice cubes in the punch bowl to keep the mixture cold. Pour the club soda or ginger ale over the surface to add effervescence and lightly stir once to combine.

5

Garnish and bitters

Float the fresh orange slices and lime wheels on top of the punch. Add Angostura bitters by dropping them evenly around the bowl (about 12 dashes total) to add aromatic depth. Give the punch one gentle stir to distribute the bitters and fruit.

6

Serve

Ladle the punch into glasses filled with fresh ice, making sure each serving gets a piece of fruit. Offer additional soda on the side for guests who want a lighter drink. Provide a small spoon or cocktail pick so guests can retrieve garnish if desired.
