Pulled Pork (child portion)

Method

Pulled Pork (child portion)

1

Warm and saucing pork

Place 0.25 lb smoked pulled pork into a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl. Add 2 tablespoons mild barbecue sauce and 2 tablespoons apple juice. Stir to combine. If using stovetop, warm over low heat for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until heated through and saucy. If using microwave, cover loosely and heat on medium power for 60–90 seconds, stir, then heat an additional 30–45 seconds if needed. The pork should be hot but not dried out.

2

Finish seasoning

After heating, stir in 1 teaspoon melted unsalted butter, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and a pinch (1/16 teaspoon) black pepper to round out flavor. Taste and adjust—use slightly less salt for children if pork was already seasoned.

Sandwich assembly

3

Prepare the bun: split the soft hamburger bun. Lightly toast cut sides in a dry skillet over medium-low for 45–60 seconds until warm and just golden, or toast briefly in a toaster. This prevents sogginess from the sauced pork.

4

Spread 1 teaspoon mayonnaise on the bottom or top bun half, if using. Pile the warmed, sauced pulled pork (all of the portion prepared) onto the bottom bun, spreading into an even layer. Add 2 pickle slices on top only if the child enjoys pickles. Top with the other bun half and press gently.

Side

5

Portion chips: place 1/2 cup kettle-style potato chips into a small dish or paper bag portion. Serve alongside the sandwich. If you prefer chips crispier after toasting the bun, keep them separate until serving to avoid steam softening them.

Plating and serving

6

Transfer the sandwich to a child-sized plate with the chips on the side. Provide a napkin. Let the sandwich cool for 1–2 minutes if still very hot before serving to a child.
