Prep

1

Chill glass

Place a pint or large beer glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the other components. This keeps the beer cold and preserves carbonation when poured.

2

Measure ingredients

Measure the cold-brew coffee, coffee liqueur, orange and lemon juice, and maple syrup so they are ready to combine quickly.

Build the cocktail

3

In a cocktail shaker (or a jar with a tight lid) add the cold-brew coffee, coffee liqueur, fresh orange juice, lemon juice and maple syrup. Add 3–4 ice cubes if you prefer a slightly chilled, diluted mixer. Cap the shaker and shake vigorously for 8–10 seconds to thoroughly combine and chill the mixture.

4

Discard the ice in the chilled glass (if you used ice to chill). Strain the shaken coffee-citrus-maple mixture into the glass, pouring gently to leave room for beer (about 2–3 ounces of head-space).

5

Slowly tilt the glass and gently pour the 12 fl oz of chilled light lager or pilsner down the inside of the glass over the back of a spoon or along the tilted side so it layers and mixes gently with the strained coffee mixture. Pouring slowly preserves carbonation and gives an attractive two-tone appearance.

6

Give the glass a very gentle stir (1–2 rotations) with a bar spoon to integrate the layers slightly while keeping some separation for visual contrast and texture.

Finish & garnish

7

Express the orange peel over the drink: hold the peel skin-side down over the glass and give it a quick twist to release oils, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the drink or perch it on the edge.

8

Float 2–3 coffee beans on top of the beer foam for aroma and a playful 'breakfast' nod. Serve immediately.
